5 things to do after installing WordPress

So you’ve got your WordPress installed, and you’ve logged in, and you’re on your dashboard. What do you do now? For some people who have used WordPress for a long time, they already know what they’re gonna do. But for someone that is completely new to this, as easy as WordPress is, using WordPress can be a big headache. Today we’re going to talk about the things that you should do after you’ve successfully installed WordPress.

#1 — Change Username

If you install WordPress via Fantastico from cPanel, then you don’t have to do this, but if you install WordPress via a FTP client, this is very important. If you install via Fantastico, you have the option to enter your preferred username, but when installing via FTP, your default username is “admin”. But this is a security issue, because with the username admin, it’s easy for hackers to find the password, and hack in your blog. In order to prevent this, after installing WP, go to your dashboard, under “Users”, click “Add New”. Then, create another user, with a different username, and set the role as an admin, because that user that you’re creating is going to be you. After you’ve created the new user, click “Log Out” on the top right hand corner, and then login as the new user. After logging in as a new user, go to your Dashboard, and under “Users” go to “Authors & Users”. What you wanna do is you wanna delete the “admin” user. And that’s it!

#2 — Permalinks

As a default, your blog’s permalinks are gonna be something like http://yourblog.com/?p=12. These are what they call “ugly” permalinks. Click here to read more about permalinks in the WordPress site. After you have read that, you can go to your Dashboard, and under “Settings”, click “Permalinks”. From there you can change your permalinks. Be wise, because it’ll be hard changing them again should you decide to.

#3– Theme

Before you start telling people about your site/blog, you gotta find a theme that suits your site. There tons of beautiful themes out there, while you’re looking for a free one, or you’re looking for a premium one.

#4 — Plugins

Before you launch your blog, make sure you have all your necessary plugins installed, activated, and configured. Make your blog launch a big one, because you only do it once.

#5 — Launch…

When you’ve done the 4 previous things correctly, you’re ready to launch your blog. So go ahead, and tell your friends, family, co-workers, and everyone you know.

Definitely things you should do before launching your blog. If I may add to the list though it’s always a good idea to put in your categories as well, this way you know you won’t get off your original ideas for posts.
